In the Golden Twenties Berlin came up as a cosmopolitan, exciting capital, a city of art and culture with legendary appeal. With the premier of films like METROPOLIS, DOKTOR MABUSE or DER BLAUE ENGEL with Marlene Dietrich, Berlin grew to an cinematic capital.

In the big studios of the UFA in Berlin-Tempelhof and the nearby Babelsberg, world-renowned directors like Fritz Lang, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and Ernst Lubitsch produced their masterpieces of cinematic art.

The Second World War caused a deep break. The production stopped, the studios got closed. Later the film company DEFA tried to continue the cinematic tradition in the eastern part of the divided Berlin with more than 700 motion pictures.

Nowadays Berlin’s film scene is gleaming again. Artists from around the world are attracted to Berlin. It is home to a wide cinema scene. Directors, artist and authors are using the lively and exceptional ambience to capture their imagination.

The BERLINALE is the venue of stars and internationally renowned characters and at the same time quite open to an expectant and interested audience.

On the Expo 2010 the large video projection “CITY CODES” will show non-verbal styles of communication between teenagers in six different countries. Symbolic gestures and behaviors from Berlin, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Moskau, Windhuk and Bejing got edited to a filmic dialog with a great visual impact. The projection is added with a genuine collage of sounds and noises from these cities.
